How to Repot A Cactus

Cacti and Succulents alike are becoming increasing popular ( I mean they even have their own emoji!) and whilst I’m still hunting for the succulent of my dreams, nearly 3 months ago I bought H and I some Cacti in various sizes. Whilst being huge Ikea fans, the pots they were sold in left a little to be desired for me. So the search to find a permanent home for these apparently easy to look after house plants began.

You will need:
– Cacti/ Succulents
– New Pots
– Pebbles or Small Stones (if new pots have no holes in the bottom)
– Cactus Soil (I got mine from B&Q )

Cue slightly big H&M Homeware Ceramic Plant Pot and mini Anthropology Terracotta Tendering Pots.

If, like mine, neither of your pots have any holes in the bottom, you’ll need to beg, buy or steal some small stones from your local B&Q or Garden Centre or anywhere else you can think of for that matter. The reason for this is there is little to help with draining and if you happen to make the mistake of watering your Cacti too much or too frequently these pebbles help to drain the excess water to prevent it from rotting the roots.

Now it’s time to add some soil, just enough to cover the stones and make sure, once planted, your cacti will sit at the correct height.

My cacti were simple enough to get out of their pot as they just slid out, but if not gently ease the plant out of it’s current pot being mindful of the roots. Then proceed to remove as much of the original soil while being carful not ot damage the root system.

Some of mine were more difficult as the original pot was probably sightly too small for the cacti but that didn’t matter, I just got as much as possible off and then continued. How To Depot A Cactus |

Place the Cacti into the new pot and finish by surrounding it with new soil to support and protect the plant.

And there you have it, your new, slightly chicer Cacti.
